Injectable Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for the Prevention of HIV: Advancing HIV Prevention Through Innovation

Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH) today hosted its Grand Round presentation on the topic, “Injectable Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for the Prevention of HIV,” delivered by Dr. A. T. Alaofin. The presentation highlighted the growing importance of innovative HIV prevention strategies, particularly the introduction of long-acting injectable PrEP as an effective option for individuals at substantial risk of HIV infection. The session provided healthcare professionals with valuable insights into current global best practices in HIV prevention and the role of injectable PrEP in reducing new HIV infections.

Dr. Alaofin explained that injectable PrEP is a long-acting preventive medication administered at scheduled intervals to HIV-negative individuals who are at increased risk of acquiring HIV. Compared with daily oral PrEP, the injectable option offers improved convenience and may enhance adherence among eligible clients, thereby increasing the effectiveness of HIV prevention programmes. The presentation also emphasized the importance of HIV testing, risk assessment, counselling, and regular follow-up as essential components of comprehensive PrEP services.
