  • KWASUTH Hosts Global Fund Executive Director, Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening HIV, TB and Malaria Response

The Chief Medical Director of Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH), Dr Bola Ahmed AbdulKadir, has welcomed the Executive Director of the Global Fund, Mr Peter Sands, and his delegation to the hospital during their working and assessment visit to Kwara State.

Receiving the delegation, Dr AbdulKadir described the Global Fund as one of the world’s largest international health financing organisations, established in 2002 to mobilise and invest resources in the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), and malaria, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. He noted that the organisation has helped save more than 70 million lives globally since its inception through strategic investments in disease prevention, treatment, and health systems strengthening.

The Chief Medical Director highlighted the remarkable impact of the Global Fund’s interventions at KWASUTH, stating that its support has become a cornerstone of the hospital’s patient care services.

According to him, the hospital currently provides a comprehensive range of Global Fund-supported services, including Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) services covering HIV testing, treatment initiation and long-term monitoring; HIV prevention interventions such as Oral Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), Cabotegravir Long-Acting Injectable (CAB-LA), and Lenacapavir-based Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (Len-PrEP); medication-assisted treatment for patients managing opioid dependence; a robust tuberculosis eradication and prevention programme; as well as healthcare insurance packages for people living with HIV and tuberculosis (PLHIV/TB) and their dependants.

Dr AbdulKadir expressed pride that KWASUTH remains among the select few healthcare facilities in Nigeria equipped and supported to deliver this full spectrum of specialised HIV and TB services, attributing the achievement to the sustained investment, partnership, and confidence reposed in the hospital by the Global Fund.

Speaking on the impact of the intervention, the CMD disclosed that in 2026 alone, 9,752 individuals have been tested for HIV at the hospital, with 79 persons diagnosed and successfully linked to care. He further revealed that 975 clients are currently receiving antiretroviral therapy at the hospital, including 75 paediatric patients, while 154 beneficiaries are from neighbouring communities, reflecting the hospital’s expanding regional impact.

On tuberculosis control, he stated that 4,275 patients have been screened for TB at the Outpatient Department (OPD), while 255 presumptive TB cases underwent evaluation using advanced diagnostic technologies, including GeneXpert, the Lateral Flow Lipoarabinomannan Assay (LF-LAM), and the Portable Digital X-ray (PDX) machine. From these evaluations, 65 patients were diagnosed with tuberculosis and promptly commenced on treatment, including 10 patients with HIV/TB co-infection who are currently receiving integrated care.

“These figures represent more than statistics; they represent lives transformed, families preserved, and healthier communities. Every one of these achievements bears the imprint of the Global Fund’s unwavering support,” Dr AbdulKadir stated.

The Chief Medical Director also appreciated the Executive Governor of Kwara State, His Excellency, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, for providing an enabling environment that continues to strengthen healthcare delivery across the state. He reaffirmed KWASUTH’s commitment to sustaining its partnership with the Global Fund towards expanding access to quality healthcare services, strengthening disease control programmes, and improving health outcomes for the people of Kwara State and Nigeria as a whole.

In his remarks, the Executive Director of the Global Fund, Mr Peter Sands, expressed satisfaction with the longstanding partnership between the Global Fund and Kwara State, noting that the organisation was encouraged by the remarkable progress recorded through its investments in the state’s healthcare sector.

Mr Sands stressed that the success of the Global Fund should not merely be measured by statistics but by the positive changes in the lives of individuals and communities. According to him, behind every figure is a person whose life has been transformed through improved access to quality healthcare.

“When a child’s life is saved, it positively impacts the parents, the family and the entire community. Healthcare interventions ultimately make people’s lives better,” he said.

The Global Fund executive director commended the Kwara State Government for demonstrating strong political commitment to improving healthcare delivery, describing political will as a critical ingredient for achieving sustainable health and development outcomes. He also applauded the Kwara State Ministry of Health for building an efficient and resilient healthcare system capable of delivering quality services to the people.

Mr Sands assured that the Global Fund would continue to strengthen its collaboration with the Kwara State Government and its health institutions, including KWASUTH, towards improving health outcomes and consolidating the gains already recorded in the fight against HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.

The visit formed part of the Executive Director’s assessment tour of Global Fund-supported programmes in Kwara State, aimed at evaluating the impact of ongoing interventions, engaging key stakeholders, and identifying opportunities to further strengthen healthcare delivery and disease control efforts across the state.
