The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has approved Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH) as a training institution for medical students of Kwara State University, Malete, for its preclinical programme.
The approval was announced by the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr Aminat El Imam, following a briefing of the MDCN accreditation team led by its Deputy Registrar, Dr Nnaemeka Nwakama.
The briefing was held at the MBA Study Centre of Kwara State University, along Ajase-Ipo Road, Ilorin.
Describing the development as a milestone, Dr El Imam said the approval marks a significant moment in the state’s healthcare and educational advancement.
She also disclosed that both the teaching hospital and the university’s preclinical programme have now received official accreditation.
She commended the MDCN team for their professionalism and integrity despite the challenges facing medical education in the country, assuring them that all identified areas for improvement would be addressed ahead of their next visit.
The Commissioner also reaffirmed the commitment of the present administration under the leadership of Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to strengthening the health sector.
According to her, efforts are ongoing to equip both the medical school and the teaching hospital with the necessary facilities and manpower to meet global standards.
In his remarks, the vice-chancellor of the Kwara State University, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, expressed satisfaction with the successful accreditation.
He appreciated the MDCN team for their objectivity and diligence throughout the exercise and assured them that all recommended improvements would be implemented promptly.
Earlier, the MDCN team lead, Dr Nwakama, had commended the Kwara State Government for its investment in impactful projects, particularly the upgrade of the General Hospital to a teaching hospital.
He noted that the development would significantly enhance access to quality healthcare services in the state.
He also acknowledged the strong collaboration between Kwara State University and KWASUTH, which, he said, contributed to a smooth accreditation process.
He, however, urged the state government to sustain its focus on the health sector and address all identified gaps before the next assessment to avoid any disruption to the programme.
With this accreditation, 300-level students of medicine and surgery at Kwara State University can now proceed to their clinical training at KWASUTH after completing their first professional examination.
